Developmental Stages

Baby room

Our youngest members, aged up to 2 years, occupy fully equipped playrooms with dedicated areas for nappy changing.  The baby room features a plethora of vibrant sensory resources in addition to low-level, accessible furniture and equipment, a milk kitchen, nappy changing and sleep areas.

Our baby room staff are selected for their calm approach, expertise and awareness of the unique needs of young babies.

We are very particular about standards of hygiene and in the baby room, extra care and attention is taken. For example, all toys and equipment used are sterilized regularly, especially those toys put into mouths and we ask that all visitors remove outdoor shoes when entering the room.

For babies being weaned onto solids, their first foods are introduced in close consultation with parents. We are then able to offer a wide variety of nutritious home-made baby purees and finger foods specially prepared from fresh vegetables and fruit, with the gradual introduction of fish and chicken, and eventually meats (again, in close liaison with parents).

Daily information about food intake, sleep times, and any other basic care routines are available to parents on a daily basis.

For children aged 0 to 2 years we provide a staff-to-child ratio of 1:3. As the older babies gain confidence on their feet and progress towards more social and gregarious play, we gradually introduce them to the next stages of development into the toddler rooms.

Pre-Toddler room

As the children develop and transition through to Pre-Toddlers, they begin to encounter a very simple structure to their day.  We support each child’s individual nap routine, as we feel it helps to keep them refreshed and well rested.  However, some children simply don’t want to miss out on any of the action by sleeping, and so we ensure there is always the option to rest or play to suit each child’s individual needs.

The children in the Pre-toddler room have lots of fun and their daily routines include activities designed to engage their individual interests. This is achieved through language development, singing, art and craft, developmental music sessions, dance, and pencil/scissor control skills to name but a few.

The staff working in our toddler rooms have been selected for their experience with children of this age and to ensure that encouragement, praise and cuddles are plentiful.

For children aged under 2 years we provide a staff-to-child ratio of 1:3. For children aged between 2 years and 3 years we provide a staff to child ratio of 1:4.

Toddler room

By the time the children reach the Toddler room, we encourage set mealtimes, registration and hygiene routines to give the children a clearer structure to their day. Many children still enjoy a nap to refresh them, and this is always accommodated within the course of the nursery day to suit each child.

The children are given lots of help and re-assurance when they start toilet training and we work closely with parents at this important stage to make it as smooth as possible.

Our Toddler room staff are patient, kind and experienced in supporting toddlers through to Pre-School.

For children aged between 2 years and 3 years we provide a staff to child ratio of 1:4.

Pre-School

In Pre-School, our older children (up to 5 years) cared for and supervised by our fully qualified and experienced Pre-School team. Our Pre-School children have a clear structure to their day, whilst still enjoying the freedom to self-select their choice of activity or resource. In Pre-School we support the children in their journey towards school readiness to help them to make that exciting transition to ‘Big School’ as smooth as possible. This includes set mealtimes, self-registration, personal hygiene and self-care routines, working together to take a role in being responsible for their environment, self-service of water and food at mealtimes, and encouraging independence and confidence.

We foster good relationships with local Primary Schools and as a result, have developed an approach to school-readiness that Reception teachers regularly praise. Our experienced Pre-School team combine this with lots of fun and games to engage the children and promote play and integration with their friends, ensuring activities lead on from, and extend, the interests of the children.

For children aged 3+ years we provide a staff ratio of 1:8.
