This activity came about due to the transitions of the older babies and the new younger babies starting. (Builds relationship with special people. PSED Making Relationships 8-20mths). We quickly realised through observation that the new babies really enjoyed nursery rhymes in particular ‘Row, Row, Row the boat’. The babies got really excited every time we sang this song and also joined in with the actions so this indicated to us this was favorite song of theirs. (Fundamental British Values – democracy).

So, to enhance this we decided to bring the nursery rhyme to life by creating a boat and a crocodile out of a cardboard box. The babies got involved in painting them both and adding bits of glitter and tissue paper. The adults then cut out some small holes to put wooden spoons through to make oars. The babies loved sitting inside the boat and moving the spoons around while we all sang ‘Row, Row, Row the boat’. (Has a strong exploratory impulse. CL Listening and Attention 8-20mths).

To further this we will be doing a nursery rhyme of the week asking for parent involvement i.e picking their own nursery rhymes and bringing in any props, books or toys they might have at home. At the end it we will be compiling a nursery book which all of our families will be able to take home and share with their families.
